Hugh Jackman Stars in Upcoming Animated Mystery, The Sheep Detectives
Hugh Jackman takes center stage in The Sheep Detectives, an animated murder mystery set to hit theaters on May 8. In the film, Jackman plays George, a shepherd whose unexpected murder prompts a group of sheep to take matters into their own hooves.
On December 18, Amazon MGM Studios released the film’s trailer, showcasing a whimsical yet intriguing narrative. According to an official synopsis, George enjoys reading detective novels to his flock every night, oblivious to the fact that they are paying attention. When his sheep discover him lifeless in a field, they resolve to unravel the mystery using the skills learned from his stories. "When a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives," the synopsis explains, highlighting their determination to prove that even sheep can be adept at solving crimes.

In addition to Jackman, the film features a robust cast. Nicholas Braun, known for his role in Succession, plays a bumbling police officer tasked with investigating George’s death. Other notable actors, including Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, and Emma Thompson, round out the live-action cast. Julia Louis-Dreyfus leads the voice cast as Lily, along with fellow stars Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and Rhys Darby portraying various members of George’s flock.
Directed by Kyle Balda, recognized for his work on the Minions franchise, The Sheep Detectives aims to blend humor and mystery for audiences of all ages. The screenplay comes from Craig Mazin, an Emmy Award-winning writer celebrated for his work on The Last of Us and Chernobyl.
As Jackman prepares for his role in The Sheep Detectives, he also has several upcoming projects, including Song Sung Blue, scheduled for release on December 25, and The Death of Robin Hood, set to premiere in June 2026.
