How Rising Gas Prices Are Affecting Latino Households Financially
Latino Households in California Face Financial Strain from Rising Gas Prices
As gasoline prices in California climb to approximately $6 per gallon, Latino families are feeling the financial impact more acutely than other households, according to a study released by UCLA researchers on Thursday.
The research, conducted by the UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Institute, indicates that escalating fuel prices are disproportionately burdening Latino households, which traditionally possess fewer financial resources and rely heavily on automobiles for daily activities and employment.
Utilizing data from the 2023 Consumer Expenditure Survey and the 2017 National Household Travel Survey, researchers evaluated the average annual fuel spending of Latino families in comparison to non-Latino households. They also assessed the reliance on vehicles and commuting distances.
The findings reveal that increased spending on fuel significantly strains Latino households’ budgets, leaving them with limited flexibility. “Latino households spend $1,300 more per year on gasoline than non-Latino households,” the report states. The study further notes that rising housing costs exacerbate the financial challenges faced by these families.
One key factor in this expenditure difference is the commuting patterns of Latino families. “Even before the gas prices increased, Latino households were already spending more money on gas than non-Latinos and always experiencing higher costs of housing,” stated Rosario Majano from the UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Institute.
Additionally, the study highlights that Latino households are less likely to possess newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles, which results in higher fuel costs without viable alternatives.
Abel Martinez, a worker balancing multiple jobs, expressed empathy for others facing similar challenges. “If you think about it, many electric cars are on the pricier side,” Majano noted. “Many Latinos are on lower income, so they don’t have the opportunity to buy these vehicles.”
Researchers are optimistic that the data will serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, aiding in the development of strategies to support communities facing financial hardship, particularly Latino families who contribute significantly to the state’s economy.
As of Thursday, the average price of regular gas in Los Angeles County reached $5.95 per gallon, while Orange County noted a slightly lower average of $5.08.
