How Prime Video Aims to Be the Go-To Place for Anime Fans Worldwide
Prime Video Aims to Become Global Leader in Anime Content
In a strategic push to diversify its offerings, Prime Video has announced its intent to become the “preferred destination for anime content globally.” This declaration was made during the inaugural Prime Video Presents: International Originals online showcase, where Gaurav Gandhi, Vice President for APAC & ANZ, highlighted upcoming anime titles from Japan.
Gandhi characterized anime as “a category truly experiencing explosive growth,” affirming the platform’s commitment to expanding its presence in this popular genre. “Given that we are the home for the best anime in Japan, we want to become the preferred destination for anime content globally too,” he stated.
Among the titles previewed was the reboot of Fist of the North Star: Hokuto No Ken, for which Prime Video holds worldwide rights. This animated series commemorates the 40th anniversary of the iconic manga, blending CGI with traditional hand-drawn animation. “Few properties can match the cultural impact of Fist of the North Star,” Gandhi commented.
Another significant title highlighted was The Ghost in the Shell, a seminal cyberpunk series exploring the complexities of humanity and technology within a futuristic 2029 metropolis. Gandhi hailed it as “the most influential Japanese sci-fi work of all time.” Prime Video retains worldwide rights for this title, with the exception of regions such as Russia and China, and enjoys an early exclusive window in Japan.
Additionally, Gandhi showcased From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman Season 2, noting that the first season was among Prime Video’s top ten titles in 45 countries. “These titles show a commitment to bringing both visionary franchises and fresh voices to audiences,” he emphasized.
The event also featured several Korean series, specifically focusing on romance-themed originals like Marry My Husband and No Gain No Love, both of which have garnered international attention. “Korean romance resonates globally and has captured hearts around the world,” Gandhi remarked. Upcoming titles for 2026 include Absolute Value of Romance, starring Kim Hyang Gi and K-pop idols, and Human x Gumiho featuring Jun Ji Hyun and Ji Chang Wook.
In discussions about the Indian market, Gandhi revealed that 25% of local content consumed on Prime Video now originates from outside India. A notable segment of the showcase included a conversation between actress Alia Bhatt and Nikhil Madhok, Head of Originals at Prime Video India. They discussed the importance of authenticity in storytelling, particularly in Bhatt’s upcoming original film, Don’t Be Shy, a coming-of-age drama produced under the Eternal Sunshine Productions banner.
“We can’t tell a story authentically if we don’t actually believe in it,” Bhatt stated. “No voice can bring magic to your screen if it’s not coming from a very genuine place.”
Gandhi concluded by highlighting the vast opportunities in the APAC region to showcase exceptional local content to a global audience. “There’s tremendous appetite for content from this region outside its home countries,” he noted. Walking away from the event, it is clear that with its enhanced focus on local and regional storytelling, Prime Video is positioning itself to lead in the international streaming landscape.
The Prime Video Presents showcase, held in London, included celebrity appearances from figures such as Stanley Tucci, Nicole Wallace, and Mercedes Ron.
