Hollywood Arson Suspect Charged with Murder in Tragic Deaths of Elderly Sisters
Man Charged with Murder and Arson After Fatal Hollywood Fire
A 39-year-old man has been charged with murder and multiple counts of felony arson following a series of fires in Hollywood, including one that resulted in the deaths of two elderly sisters. Jovan Lamar Duverne faces two counts of murder and 11 counts of felony arson, reflecting a troubling pattern of criminal behavior that occurred between late January and early February.
Prosecutors have also filed a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders against Duverne, along with sentence enhancements related to a prior arson conviction. He is set for arraignment on Wednesday in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom and is currently being held without bond.
According to court documents, Duverne is accused of setting fires at ten different locations in Hollywood between January 26 and February 4. Authorities report that a handheld torch was used to ignite rubbish, raising serious concerns about safety within the community.
On February 4, emergency services responded to a fire at approximately 2 a.m. at a residence occupied by Maria Del Consuelo Alarcon-Valdez, 76, and Yolanda Honda, 82, who perished in the blaze. Duverne was arrested the same day near Hollywood Boulevard and Wilton Place.
If convicted on all charges, Duverne could face either the death penalty or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, with a decision regarding capital punishment expected later.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman condemned the tragic events and emphasized the severity of such reckless actions. “Deliberately igniting multiple fires in a residential community shows a shocking disregard for human life,” he stated. Hochman extended his condolences to the families affected, affirming the commitment of his office to pursue the most rigorous charges available to seek justice.
As of now, it remains unclear whether Duverne has secured legal representation.
