Netflix Showcases Upcoming Talent and Content at Upfront Event
In a vibrant display of star power, Netflix made headlines at its annual Upfront event, which kicked off with Jennifer Lopez introducing her upcoming film, Office Romance. “I’m Jennifer Lopez,” she stated, to which her co-star, Brett Goldstein, quipped, “And I’m standing next to Jennifer Lopez.” The duo continued to tease their on-screen chemistry, with Lopez expressing her excitement about returning to romantic comedies, proclaiming, “it’s been too long and this one might be my favorite one I’ve ever done.”
Goldstein, known for his role in Ted Lasso, added, “It’s actually f*cking mental” in reaction to the buzz surrounding their film, set to premiere on June 5.
The event continued with Amy Reinhard, President of Advertising, highlighting the success of Netflix’s ad-supported model, which has recently launched in 15 new markets, including Sweden and Indonesia. She celebrated the platform’s growing number of ad subscribers, discussing “full funnel results” in an engaging presentation.
Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria announced plans to release 40 scripted series this year from its U.S. lineup, which includes 27 returning shows. The event featured prominent actors such as Millie Bobby Brown, Florence Pugh, and The Hunting Wives stars Brittany Snow and Malin Akerman, all contributing to the excitement.
Brown reflected on her journey with Netflix, recalling her start as Eleven in Stranger Things: “Netflix is where I grew up, where I learned to act, where I learned to produce.” She teased her upcoming romantic comedy, Just Picture It, affirming, “It turns out love is a lot more like the Upside Down than you think.”
Snow and Akerman excitedly promoted the second season of The Hunting Wives, with Akerman stating, “Season one got a lot of people talking, because everything is bigger in Texas.” Pugh shared insights into her role in East of Eden, Netflix’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel. “We realized that we shared a very specific passion about one character in particular, Cathy Ames,” she remarked.
In a nod to the sporting world, Elle Duncan detailed Netflix’s recent acquisitions, which include broadcast rights for the NFL and streaming rights for significant events like the Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031. To highlight its upcoming film The 99’ers, the company welcomed members of the 1999 U.S. Women’s Soccer Team, including Mia Hamm.
The Upfront event also featured humor, with Pete Davidson making an appearance to promote Netflix’s growth in the podcast space. Davidson quipped, “I’m going to read what I’ve been told I’m allowed to say, so pretend like this is organic,” before joking about his Netflix projects, including The Roast of Kevin Hart and Remarkably Bright Creatures.
As the presentations wrapped up, Tina Fey and Will Forte, stars of The Four Seasons, closed the event by emphasizing Netflix’s commitment to bringing diverse talent closer to advertisers. Fey stated, “We’re bringing Netflix’s most locally available stars closer to you,” leading to a lively performance from Forte.
