Henry Cavill’s First Look as Highlander Revealed at CinemaCon by Amazon MGM Studios
At CinemaCon on Wednesday night, Amazon MGM Studios unveiled the latest version of Highlander, offering a glimpse of the much-anticipated film to exhibitors and fans.
Henry Cavill stars as the immortal warrior Connor MacLeod, with Russell Crowe taking on the role of his mentor, Ramirez. The cast also includes Siobhán Cullen, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, and Dave Bautista.
Cavill’s injury during pre-production last year delayed filming for the reboot, which is directed by Chad Stahelski. The project aims to revitalize the cult classic, which initially premiered in 1986.
The original Highlander, featuring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, portrayed the epic struggle among immortal warriors through a blend of historical and contemporary narratives. Directed by Russell Mulcahy, the film gained a dedicated following and spawned several sequels, as well as a television series.
The first look at the new film, exclusively shown at the event, promises a loud, international, and stylish spectacle. The story continues to follow the Immortals as they move across centuries towards the Gathering, a climactic showdown where only one will survive. The visuals feature dramatic fight scenes and elaborate costumes.
Stahelski directs this theatrical feature from a script by Michael Finch, known for John Wick: Chapter 4. Producers include Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt from United Artists, Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner.
United Artists has obtained the full rights to the 1986 original and is exploring the potential for a new series, after Lionsgate’s initial development of the film.
