HBO Max and Studiocanal Join Forces to Bring You the Italian Prequel Series ‘Gomorrah – The Origins’

HBO Max and Studiocanal Acquire "Gomorrah – The Origins" Rights

HBO Max and Studiocanal have secured distribution rights for Gomorrah – The Origins, a prequel to the acclaimed gangster drama from Sky Italia.

Beta Films facilitated the sale of HBO Max rights for German-speaking regions and Turkey. Studiocanal has acquired the series for France, where it is expected to air on Canal+. Additional buyers include SBS in Australia, ORF in Austria, TET in Latvia, and Nova in Greece.

Under the deal with HBO Max, viewers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Luxembourg will also gain access to the original Gomorrah series and the feature film The Immortal. ORF holds free-to-air rights in Austria.

Gomorrah – The Origins made its debut on Sky Italia and is set to launch on Sky in the UK. The series, set in Naples in 1977, follows Pietro, a tough city kid who navigates a world of petty crime alongside his friends. With aspirations to become a powerful figure in the neighborhood, Pietro quickly finds himself entangled in a dangerous power struggle, ultimately rising to become Don Pietro Savastano, the godfather of the Camorra.

The series is produced by Sky Studios and Cattleya, a division of ITV Studios. Marco D’Amore, who starred in the original series, directed the first four episodes and served as co-writer and artistic supervisor, while Francesco Ghiaccio directed the final two episodes. The series is created by Leonardo Fasoli, Maddalena Ravagli, and Roberto Saviano, who authored the book that inspired the original show. Executive producers include Riccardo Tozzi for Cattleya and Nils Hartmann for Sky Studios.

Gomorrah is based on the bestseller Gomorra, published by Arnaldo Mondadori Editore. The original series aired for five seasons and has been distributed to over 150 territories globally. The feature film The Immortal, which bridges the narrative between seasons four and five, premiered in 2019.

A teaser trailer for the series was released in November.
