Haruomi Hosono, Co-Founder of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Inspiration for Harry Styles, Shares Exciting News About His New Album
Haruomi Hosono to Release New Album This Fall
New York, NY — Haruomi Hosono, the influential co-founder of the groundbreaking Japanese electronic band Yellow Magic Orchestra, announced on May 18 that he will release his 23rd studio album this fall. Titled Sincerely Yours, the album is set to debut on September 11 via Ghostly International.
In a statement, Hosono reflected on his musical journey: “I am now 78 years old, but from here on, I feel a growing curiosity toward the unknown music that my new self will create, while also embracing the music of my former self—as if I now carry two musical worlds within me.”
In celebration of this release, Hosono will perform two shows: one at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on September 16 and another at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on September 20.
Emerging in the late 1970s, Yellow Magic Orchestra earned acclaim for their innovative sound, drawing comparisons to Kraftwerk in their ability to challenge musical boundaries. The group’s influence extends across various genres, including techno, ambient, and synth-pop. Hosono’s contributions, both with YMO and as a solo artist and a member of the folk-rock band Happy End, have left a lasting impact on contemporary musicians. Notable artists such as Mac DeMarco, Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, and Harry Styles have all cited Hosono as a significant influence.
In a 2022 interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Styles revealed that his 2022 album Harry’s House was inspired by Hosono’s work. “It was named after Hosono; he had an album in the ’70s called Hosono House. I spent that little chunk in Japan and heard that record, and I was like, ‘I love that,’” said Styles.
Hosono’s debut solo album, released in 1973, Hosono House, features a collection of 11 engaging rock and folk-rock songs that showcase his distinctive musical style.
