Harry Styles Shares the Funny Story Behind His Unexpected Crowd Appearance at Pope Leo XIV’s Conclave Election
Harry Styles Reveals Why He Attended Pope Leo XIV’s Conclave Election
Harry Styles recently opened up about his unexpected appearance at the conclave election of Pope Leo XIV. The singer shared details during an interview with BBC Radio 1 on January 23, where he also discussed his latest single, "Aperture."
Styles, 31, recalled how he found himself in Saint Peter’s Square during a historically significant moment. “I was getting a haircut in Rome,” he explained, connecting with fans who had spotted him amid the crowds when Pope Leo XIV was elected as the successor to the late Pope Francis.
"I heard all these people start shouting, ‘Habemus papam! Habemus papam!’ People just running down the street," Styles recounted. The barbershop stopped as his stylist exclaimed, “Habemus papam! There’s a new pope!”
After finishing his haircut, Styles decided to join the throngs of people celebrating just a five-minute walk away. "It was wild," he noted.
BBC Radio 1 host Greg James humorously remarked that the Pope might be the only person capable of overshadowing Styles, to which the artist responded with a jest, asking, "Who’s this getting all this attention?"
Styles was photographed in the crowd on May 2025 during the conclave, wearing a blue jacket, sunglasses, and a grey baseball cap bearing the phrase "Techno is My Boyfriend." The hat may hint at the musical direction of his upcoming album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, set to release on March 6. The single "Aperture," a five-minute dance track, marks the first release from this project.
Interestingly, Styles revealed that "Aperture" was created at the end of the album’s development. "It was kind of amazing for me," he shared. "We had most of the album done, and a lot of it was kind of exploring a lot of the themes that I think the song is exploring." He described the creation of "Aperture" as a time when he and his team felt liberated and were simply enjoying the process, suggesting the track serves as a mission statement for the album.
