Harry Styles Responds to ‘Queerbaiting’ Claims with Playful Kiss for Saturday Night Live’s Ben Marshall
Harry Styles Addresses Queerbaiting Allegations on Saturday Night Live
Harry Styles tackled allegations of "queerbaiting" during his recent hosting stint on Saturday Night Live (SNL) on March 14. Styles, 32, noted, “People seem to pay a lot of attention to the clothes I was wearing, and some people accused me of something called ‘queerbaiting.’ Did it ever occur to you that maybe you don’t know everything about me, dad? I ran it past him, he was fine with it.”
The term "queerbaiting" is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as the practice of attempting to appeal to LGBTQ audiences in a misleading or superficial way. During his monologue, Styles humorously suggested that any misunderstanding might stem from his enjoyment of kissing.
In a comedic segment, SNL cast members Chloe Fineman and Sarah Sherman approached Styles during his monologue, only to retreat as Styles listed several turnoffs. When Styles expressed a particular attraction to “a tight little bum,” SNL star Ben Marshall jumped in for a kiss, prompting Styles to joke, “Come on, Ben! Everyone knows there’s nothing little about that thaaaang. You’re holding a damn wagon back there.” The two then embraced for a kiss, with Styles playfully calling it “queerbaiting.”
Styles’ monologue also featured light-hearted reflections on the prominence of fruit in his music. He remarked, “I realized I spent half of my life in music, touring, creating albums, and making songs about fruit that people think are about sex! I just really like fruit, guys. I like sex too.” He described a whimsical scenario about enjoying papaya on a sandy holiday, underscoring his humorous take on his artistic inspirations.
This hosting appearance follows Styles’ cameo in Ryan Gosling’s SNL monologue the prior week, where he expressed his desire to brush up on hosting since his last appearance in 2019. Gosling, in turn, performed his song “I’m Just Ken” from the Barbie movie to deflect attention from Styles sitting in the front row.
Styles hosted and performed on SNL to promote his fourth studio album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, which was released on March 6. Reports indicate that Styles intends to forego a traditional world tour in favor of multi-night residencies called Together, Together in seven cities, aiming to minimize travel and avoid burnout.
An insider shared that this approach aligns with Styles’ focus on personal well-being, stating, “Harry approached this project and tour very mindfully … He is incredibly emotionally mature and is constantly working on himself.”
Fans can look forward to Styles’ Together, Together Tour with select dates across cities including Amsterdam, London, Mexico City, and Sydney. The tour will feature various support acts, such as Robyn and Shania Twain.
Reflecting on his recent break from touring, Styles noted, “To be there to get to know my niece as she’s growing up, it’s so obvious to me what’s real.” He emphasized the importance of finding balance in his life, a sentiment that has guided his artistic and personal choices.
The next episode of Saturday Night Live is set to air on April 4, featuring actor Jack Black as host and musician Jack White as the musical guest.
