Harrison Ford Honors Helen Mirren with the Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award: Catch Her Inspiring Speech
Harrison Ford Honors Helen Mirren with Cecil B. DeMille Award at Golden Globes
Harrison Ford referred to Helen Mirren as a "badass" while presenting her with the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award during the Golden Globes’ Golden Eve event. The ceremony aired on CBS on January 8.
Ford, 83, and Mirren, 80, attended the event held on January 6, where Ford praised his 1923 co-star for her significant contributions to the film and television industries. The Cecil B. DeMille Award is recognized as an annual honor for outstanding achievements in these fields.
"I first met Dame Helen when she played my character’s wife in Peter Weir’s Mosquito Coast," Ford recalled in his speech, reflecting on their collaboration in the 1986 film. "We had three lovely children; the script required us to refer to Helen as ‘mother.’ Forty years later, I had the pleasure of working with her again in 1923. The word that comes to mind is not Dame. It’s badass. And when she goes full badass, it’s awesome to watch."
In her acceptance speech, Mirren reflected on her over 50 years in the industry, noting that the Golden Globes were "the very first organization in America to give me an award," recognizing her first win for Losing Chase in 1997.
"The DeMille award was described to me as a ‘career recognition,’ but I prefer to think of it as a life lived, a life survived, a life enjoyed, a life sweated, and a life carried on," she shared with the audience. "If this were my memorial, I’m thrilled at who showed up for me, and I am making a list of the no-shows," she joked, eliciting laughter from the crowd.
Mirren also reminisced about early experiences that sparked her passion for theater and film, from the joys of driving her ’67 convertible Mustang to acknowledging the impact of her notable co-stars, including Ryan Reynolds, Will Smith, and Al Pacino. She also highlighted her contribution to the hit film Barbie, which she narrated.
The Board of the Golden Globes announced Mirren as the recipient of this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award in November, honoring her impressive body of work. Throughout her career, she has won three Golden Globes and is nominated again this year for her role in MobLand.
Comedian Nikki Glaser is set to host the awards ceremony on January 11, which will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
