Growing Concerns About Land Shifts in Rancho Palos Verdes
Emergency Meeting Scheduled in Rancho Palos Verdes to Address Land Movement
An emergency meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening in Rancho Palos Verdes following reports of new land movement in the area. City officials speculate that rainfall earlier this year may have contributed to the situation, leading them to consider extending a ban on bicycles and motorcycles due to safety concerns.
Recent data reveals that the Abalone Cove Landslide has accelerated by an average of five percent since January, now measuring approximately 2.24 inches of movement per week. Similarly, the Portuguese Bend landslide has seen an increase of 7.1%, moving about one-and-a-half inches weekly.
To aid in monitoring the situation, the city has introduced a new tool featuring heat maps that illustrate land movement. These maps indicate a significant expansion of affected areas, with notable increases observed from December to February.
The emergency meeting is set to begin at 7 p.m. Participants can attend in person at Hesse Park or join via Zoom through the city’s website.
