Grazing Goats Help Clear Dry Brush in Glendale
Grazing Goats Return to Glendale for Wildfire Mitigation
Glendale is welcoming a herd of grazing goats this week as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to mitigate wildfire risks. Starting Wednesday, a group contracted through California Grazing will work for approximately one week to clear 20 acres of dry brush on the hillsides of Verdugo Park, specifically targeting areas near homes on Las Flores Drive.
This early action follows heavy rainfall in recent months, which has spurred significant vegetation growth in the region. To address these conditions, the city plans to deploy additional grazing herds later this summer to manage the increased fuel for potential wildfires.
The goat grazing initiative is a key element of the Glendale Fire Department’s comprehensive Vegetation Management Program. This program also includes mechanized brush clearance, property inspections, and community engagement to reduce overall wildfire risk.
Over 270 goats, along with several sheep, will be utilized in this effort to consume hazardous fire fuels, as reported by Tracey Leong for NBC4 News.
