Michael Douglas, a celebrated actor renowned for his significant contributions to cinema, places the highest value on his role as a father. The Academy Award-winning star’s family life has been shaped profoundly over the years, notably beginning with the birth of his son, Cameron, in 1978 with his first wife, Diandra Luker. Their marriage lasted for 18 years, concluding with a divorce finalized in 2000.
Douglas later married actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, with whom he has two children: Dylan, 25, and Carys, 22. Reflecting on his journey, Douglas stated in a 2010 interview with AARP The Magazine, "My career was the most important thing in my life, followed by marriage and children. And it’s completely reversed now… I never anticipated starting a family and the joy of raising kids at my age."
In recent years, Douglas’s children have frequently accompanied him at public events. Notably, in July 2024, both Dylan and Carys attended a New York City screening of Douglas’s documentary, America’s Burning. Earlier, in October, Cameron and Dylan supported their father during the 2024 Princess Grace Awards where he received the Prince Rainier III Award.
Cameron Douglas, 47
Cameron Douglas, born on December 13, 1978, is the only child from Douglas’s first marriage. He has faced significant challenges, including a battle with drug addiction that began at age 13. In his 2019 memoir, Long Way Home, Cameron detailed his experiences with substances, noting a turning point in 2009 when he was sentenced to five years in prison for drug-related charges.
"There were moments when hope dwindled… and then it’s just a train out of the station," Cameron recalled in an interview. "I thought I was going to lose him," Douglas expressed about his son’s struggles. Following his release from prison in 2016, Cameron dedicated himself to sobriety and aiding others on similar paths.
Douglas commended his son’s resilience, stating, "I’m very proud of him… He’s talking the talk and walking the walk." Now, Cameron is a father himself, sharing two children with his partner, yoga instructor Viviene Thibes. Their daughter, Lua Lizzy Douglas, was born on December 18, 2017, followed by a son, Ryder T. Douglas, in December 2020.
Dylan Douglas, 25
Dylan Douglas, the couple’s first child, was born on August 8, 2000, just before Douglas and Zeta-Jones tied the knot. At age 15, Dylan spoke openly about his struggles with dyslexia at a public event, drawing praise for his eloquence. Douglas expressed pride in Dylan’s charitable efforts and achievements.
Dylan furthered his education at Brown University, sharing his journey on social media, including moments from college life that highlight his academic pursuits. He graduated in 2022, receiving heartfelt congratulations from both parents.
During a 2019 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Douglas discussed his son’s adventurous spirit, reflecting on Dylan’s recent skydiving experiences with cautious amusement.
Carys Douglas, 22
Carys Douglas, the youngest of Douglas’s children, was born on April 20, 2003. Zeta-Jones recounted being nine months pregnant with Carys when she won an Academy Award for her role in Chicago. Over the years, Carys has joined her mother at numerous fashion events, revealing an interest in the fashion world.
A shared interview with Zeta-Jones showcased Carys’s childhood perceptions, recalling her initial belief that her father was a "pancake maker," not realizing the full extent of his celebrity status until later in life. Despite grappling with the challenges of being a public figure from a young age, Carys has begun to embrace the world of fashion and the opportunities it presents.
"My parents do a really good job of reality-checking me and being like, ‘Look around you. The life you have is extraordinary,’" Carys said, underscoring the values her parents instill as she pursues her aspirations.
As Michael Douglas continues to navigate his illustrious career, his dedication to his family remains a pivotal element of his life, illustrating the profound impact of fatherhood in his journey.
