Get to Know Idris Elba’s Children: Isan and Winston

Idris Elba, known for his roles in high-profile projects like Luther, is a devoted father to two children: daughter Isan and son Winston. Elba shares Isan with his ex-wife Hanne "Kim" Nørgaard and Winston with his former girlfriend, Naiyana Garth.

In a 2017 interview, Elba expressed the profound impact his children have on his life. “They’re a part of me,” he stated, revealing how they inspire him through challenging times. “They are the reason I get up and do it. When it’s a hard day and I think about bringing them up, I go, ‘Thank you for existing so I have a purpose.’"

Welcoming Isan in 2002 and Winston in 2014 has also contributed to Elba’s self-discovery. In a recent conversation with Esquire UK, he mentioned, “My children love me and maybe that’s helped me love myself a bit more.” He noted that one of his favorite aspects of parenthood is witnessing the unique development of his children’s personalities, calling it “human magic.”

Isan Elba, born on January 5, 2002, has made her mark as a mental health advocate and aspiring actress. Elba has embraced his role as a “girl dad,” emphasizing the importance of uniform values for both his daughter and son. “Boys and girls are different but you aren’t as a parent,” he explained. “Dad advice is dad advice.”

In 2019, Isan became the Golden Globe Ambassador, demonstrating her commitment to both entertainment and advocacy. “I’ve always been a lover of TV and movies and I dream to be in the industry one day,” she commented, highlighting her focus on addressing mental health issues and the stigma surrounding them.

Reflecting on her achievement, Elba noted, “It has such a positive impact on her life and our lives and we can see the confidence and aspiration in Isan grow.”

At the 76th Golden Globes, Elba shared red-carpet advice with Isan, emphasizing the importance of poise and presence. Isan has joined her father at numerous premieres and events, even sacrificing her high school prom to support him at Coachella in 2019.

However, their dynamic has not been without tension. When Isan auditioned for a role in Elba’s film Beast and was not cast, she reportedly didn’t speak to him for about three weeks. Elba later reflected, “She was very gracious … I’m really proud of her to go through that.”

Meanwhile, Isan’s initial reaction to her father being named PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2018 was mixed, as she humorously remarked, “I wake up in the morning and it’s my dad. I was like, ‘This is not what I was expecting. This is not very fun.’”

Currently studying film and television production at New York University, Isan is set to graduate in 2024. In a recent interview, she expressed her ambition to become a producer, stating, “I grew up on film sets and I’ve been around that my entire life so it was kind of a no-brainer.”

Winston Elba, 11

Winston Elba, the youngest of the two, was welcomed into the world on April 17, 2014. Elba announced Winston’s arrival on Twitter with a heartfelt message, sharing a photo of the newborn’s tiny fingers holding his own.

Winston’s name carries special meaning, honoring Elba’s father, who passed away from lung cancer. “I’d love [Winston] to be able to say the same things about his old man that I say about my dad,” Elba said.

As a father, Elba described himself as “super doting,” expressing affection through hugs and kisses. He noted that while his older daughter may feel overwhelmed at times, Winston still enjoys those moments of closeness.

Although Winston may not fully grasp his father’s fame, he recognizes Elba as the voice of Knuckles in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. “He loves seeing Knuckles … and I think he loves recognizing his dad’s voice,” Elba remarked during an interview.
