General Hospital Honors Anthony Geary with a Special Episode: Genie Francis Reflects on Luke’s Impact
Today’s episode of ABC’s General Hospital serves as a tribute to the late Anthony Geary, who passed away on December 14 at the age of 78. Geary was best known for portraying Luke Spencer, a character that became synonymous with the soap opera.
Following Geary’s death, the character Luke Spencer was written out of the show. Today’s tribute will feature notable cast members, including Genie Francis (Laura Collins), Jane Elliott (Tracy Quartermaine), Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos), Laura Wright (Carly Spencer), Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth Webber), and Alexa Havins (Lulu Spencer).
“Every memory leads back to Luke Spencer,” the show’s official Twitter account stated this morning. Viewers are invited to join for a special and emotional episode honoring his legacy. A promotional clip includes a candle lighting, flashbacks of Geary’s iconic moments, and a tearful Francis, who expresses gratitude, saying, “Thank you for the love of a lifetime.”
The promotional clip culminates with a poignant moment from Geary’s final episode in 2016 when he turns to look back and, in voiceover, states, “It’s time to let go.”
In a trailer featured on YouTube, Benard’s character, Sonny, reflects, “He was more than my friend, he was my brother.” The trailer also captures Francis in a church pew, stating, “Luke, you never left me.”
Geary’s passing occurred in the Netherlands following surgery three days prior. He joined General Hospital in 1978 and quickly became a fixture on the show alongside Francis, whose character Laura Webber was central to the narrative. Their wedding in 1981 set daytime ratings records and became a significant cultural moment.
Throughout his tenure, Geary received multiple Daytime Emmy Awards for his work on General Hospital in 1982, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2012, and 2015.
General Hospital airs at 3 p.m. ET in New York and 2 p.m. PT in California. It is also available for streaming on Hulu.
