Gas Prices Surge as National Average Hits Highest Mark in Over a Year
The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has increased by 9.2 cents, reaching $4.392, marking its highest point since July 22, 2022. In California, prices have soared even higher, with several counties, including Los Angeles, reporting averages above $6.
As of Friday, the average price in Los Angeles County rose 3.7 cents overnight to $6.141, the highest level since October 5, 2023. Just a week ago, the average was $5.98, and it has climbed from $6.007 a month earlier.
Since the U.S.-Israel attack on Iran on February 28, the price of a gallon of regular gasoline has surged by $1.44. Los Angeles currently stands out among nearly two dozen California counties with gas prices exceeding the $6 mark. The statewide average reached $6.06 on Friday morning, up from $6.01 on Thursday and significantly higher than $5.88 just a week ago.
In Orange County, the average price rose 4.7 cents to $6.116, reaching its highest level since October 3, 2023. This price has increased for ten consecutive days, totaling an upward movement of 26.9 cents, including a rise of 2.3 cents on Thursday. Compared to last week, the Orange County average is up by 17.8 cents, 17.6 cents higher than a month ago, and $1.403 above last year’s figure.
California’s gas prices typically exceed national averages due to various factors, including taxes, environmental regulations, and fuel requirements. "California’s gasoline supply is significantly affected by the Strait of Hormuz closure," noted Kandace Redd, senior public affairs specialist for the Automobile Club of Southern California, in a statement on Thursday.
The national average has now risen for nine consecutive days, totaling an increase of 37.2 cents, including a rise of 7.1 cents on Thursday.
