G-Dragon’s Agency Issues Apology Following Controversial Shirt Incident
G-Dragon’s agency has issued an apology following a controversial performance in Macau, China, where the K-pop star wore a shirt featuring culturally insensitive imagery.
In a statement released on Sunday, May 3 — a day after the performance — Galaxy Corporation addressed the incident on the performer’s website, expressing regret for the “inappropriate wording” found on G-Dragon’s clothing. “This incident has once again reminded us of the importance of cultural sensitivity and responsible review,” the agency stated.
The agency committed to revising its internal review processes, stating, “We will thoroughly reassess and strengthen our internal review and verification processes, including styling and related internal processes, and move forward with a higher standard of global respect and responsibility.” They emphasized a dedication to cultural awareness and respect for their diverse fan base.
The problematic shirt prominently featured a Dutch racial term likened to the N-word, alongside a caricature-like image of a Black man. The statement concluded with another apology to “everyone who was hurt or disappointed by this incident.”
This is not the first occasion G-Dragon has faced accusations of racial insensitivity. In 2013, he posted a photo of himself with his face painted entirely black, a move his spokesperson later asserted was misinterpreted. “[G-Dragon] was simply wearing different face paint colors, and this is a HUGE misunderstanding,” the representative explained at the time, asserting that it was intended as part of an album cover concept.
Social media users have also resurfaced images of G-Dragon wearing the same shirt with the offensive term from years earlier.
Billboard has reached out to G-Dragon’s representatives for further comment.
