Freshman’s Incredible Save Fuels Norco’s Journey to the Top in High School Baseball
Dylan Seward: Courageous Act Rescues Coach and Inspires Team
Dylan Seward, a standout shortstop for Norco High School, made headlines during the summer of 2024 for a bold act that garnered significant attention within the baseball community. Although he doesn’t pitch, his exceptional skills as a switch-hitting infielder position him among the top prospects in the Class of 2027.
The pivotal moment came when Seward publicly addressed an attempt to oust veteran head coach Gary Parcell, who had devoted over 35 years to the program. In a heartfelt social media post, Seward shared his disappointment with the school’s administration regarding the pressure on Parcell to retire.
“I have always been advised by my parents to be mindful of what I post online as it may offend others, affect my reputation or baseball career,” Seward wrote. “However, after much thought and guidance, I write this post today to express my disappointment with the athletic director and principal at Norco High’s decision to fire coach Gary Parcell after 35+ years of dedication and commitment.”
Despite official statements claiming Parcell was never fired, it was clear he was being encouraged to step down. Seward’s public stand prompted previous players and community members to rally in support, reinvigorating the calls for Parcell to remain at the helm.
"This wasn’t just a job or coaching role for him; it was much more,” Seward continued in his post. “He was a teacher and mentor to many generations of young men that came through Norco. He taught us how to play the game with integrity, accountability, and respect not only for our team but others as well.”
Seward expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play varsity as a freshman, acknowledging that the decision had not been welcomed by older teammates. “The thought of you departing this way is horrible,” he commented, an honest expression that reflected the sentiments of many.
His impactful message led to Parcell retaining his position, allowing him to continue coaching for the 33rd and 34th seasons. Recently, the Norco Cougars clinched the Big VIII League championship and are positioned as strong contenders for the Southern Section Division 1 title, with Seward achieving a batting average of .443, featuring 39 hits and six home runs.
“I was super appreciative,” Parcell remarked about Seward’s support. “The one part that hit me was when he came in as a freshman a lot of people left. They thought I was playing favorites. He was better than everybody, and I recognized it. His performance is backing me up.”
This season has been remarkable for Parcell, now 72, as his team boasts a record of 24-3 and is ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times. “The kids are having fun, the coaches are having fun,” he said. “I’m surrounded by some real good coaches that make my job easier.”
Parcell expressed deep appreciation for Seward’s courage and the solidarity shown by others amidst the uncertainty. “It brought me to tears,” he added.
The incident serves as a testament to the impact of youth courage and honesty, demonstrating that when a young individual speaks their truth, it resonates far beyond initial expectations. The encouraging feedback from college coaches, who expressed eagerness to recruit Seward, underscores the far-reaching implications of his actions.
