Frederick E.O. Toye to Direct Amazon’s ‘God Of War’ Series as Pre-Production and Casting Begin for Two Seasons
Prime Video’s God of War Series Gains Emmy-Winning Director Frederick E.O. Toye
Prime Video has announced that Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy-winning director known for his work on Shōgun and The Boys, will direct the first two episodes of its highly anticipated God of War series. This adaptation of the popular video game is produced by Sony Pictures Television in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios. Toye joins Ronald D. Moore, who serves as the series’ showrunner, writer, and executive producer.
Pre-production is currently underway in Vancouver, and casting efforts for the lead roles of Kratos and Atreus are in progress. The series received a two-season order, initially greenlit by Prime Video in December 2022. The project’s momentum increased significantly last fall when Moore took over as showrunner, leading to a creative overhaul.
Earlier this year, Prime Video quietly expanded the order to two seasons. This decision is common for large-scale productions, as it allows the amortization of significant upfront costs associated with world-building, set design, and costume creation over multiple seasons.
Based on the renowned PlayStation video game set in ancient mythology, God of War tells the story of father and son duo Kratos and Atreus as they set out to fulfill the last wishes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. As they navigate their journey, Kratos aims to teach his son the responsibilities of being a god, while Atreus strives to impart lessons on humanity to his father.
The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions, under his overall deal at Sony TV.
Executive producers on the project include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, Ben McGinnis, and Jeff Ketcham serve as co-executive producers.
Toye brings extensive experience to the series, having directed over 130 hours of television. He won a Directing for a Drama Series Emmy for his work on the Shōgun episode "Crimson Sky." His recent credits for Prime Video include directing multiple episodes of Fallout, The Boys, and The Terminal List. He has also just finished directing the opening episodes of the upcoming series Terminal List: Dark Wolf and Bloodaxe.
Toye’s impressive résumé includes directing acclaimed series such as Lost, The Good Wife, Person of Interest, American Gods, The Walking Dead, See, Lost in Space, Westworld, Watchmen, and Snowpiercer. He is represented by CAA and Sloane Offer Weber and Dern.
