Fisherman Hooks 7-Foot Great White Shark at Hermosa Beach Pier
Fisherman Frees Great White Shark at Hermosa Beach
HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. – An early morning fishing trip quickly transformed into a jaw-dropping spectacle when an experienced angler hooked a seven-foot great white shark at the Hermosa Beach Pier. The encounter, captured on video, highlights a notable increase in shark activity along the Southern California coast.
The fisherman was initially targeting mackerel when he unexpectedly caught the apex predator. Thanks to prompt assistance from nearby lifeguards, the shark was unhooked and safely returned to the ocean. Experts indicate that warmer water temperatures may be drawing juvenile sharks closer to popular shorelines, evidenced by similar sightings in recent weeks.
Witnesses described the scene as reminiscent of a thriller film. The fisherman, familiar with species like leopard and horn sharks, acknowledged the encounter as particularly intense. "I saw the teeth and I realized it was a great white," he said, describing the moment as "intimidating." After quickly assessing the situation, he acted in accordance with legal protections surrounding the species, emphasizing the importance of releasing it back into the surf.
Both the shark and a second individual spotted that morning were reported to swim away healthy and unharmed.
As the summer progresses, lifeguards and marine experts are urging beachgoers to remain vigilant. Currently, no official shark warning signs have been posted at Hermosa Beach, but concerns are mounting as increasing water temperatures prompt juvenile great whites to venture into shallower waters. This trend follows a recent incident at Newport Beach, where an eight-foot shark was seen circling a surfer.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the ocean conditions, advising swimmers and surfers to stay attentive to their surroundings, particularly for dorsal fins or schools of baitfish that attract predators. In the event of accidental encounters with great whites, fishermen are reminded to release them immediately and refrain from removing them from the water, if possible. Reporting any shark sightings near popular swimming areas is also encouraged to ensure safety for all beachgoers.
