Media Res Enters First-Look Distribution Deal with Fifth Season, Launching with ‘Summer of 1985’
Media Res has announced a first-look distribution agreement with Fifth Season, marking their collaboration with the Swedish series Summer of 1985 serving as the inaugural project. The first trailer for the series, reminiscent of Stranger Things, has also been released.
Fifth Season, which previously handled the distribution of Media Res titles including Pachinko, Scenes from a Marriage, and The Morning Show, will have the first opportunity to distribute Media Res’s scripted projects.
The debut series, Summer of 1985, is co-created by Björn Stein, known for The Bridge. It is produced for the Swedish network SVT and is based on a novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, the acclaimed author of Let The Right One In. The storyline follows a group of friends planning an unforgettable summer in the Stockholm archipelago. Their idyllic time is disrupted when a local boy is discovered drowned near the mythical island of Svärtan, leading to a murder investigation that reveals underlying tensions within the close-knit community. The cast includes Linus Rogsgård, Ture Nerman, Nelly Anderbro, Stina Kristiansen, Josefin Neldén, Sanna Sundqvist, and Rolf Lassgård.
Jennifer Ebell, EVP of Television Distribution at Fifth Season, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that Media Res "shares our ambition to bring distinctive, globally resonant storytelling to audiences worldwide." She described Summer of 1985 as "a psychological coming-of-age thriller built for multi-generational viewing."
Blomgren, representing Media Res, emphasized that Fifth Season is "the perfect partner to drive forward our continued ambition to bring IP and talent-led projects from all around the world to global audiences." He voiced optimism about collaborating to introduce Summer of 1985 and explore future opportunities.
