Félix Viscarret to Direct Film on ETA’s Infamous Kidnapping and Murder of Miguel Ángel Blanco
Félix Viscarret, renowned for his work on HBO’s series Patria, is set to take on a new project centered around one of the most impactful events in Basque history. The director will helm Blanco, a film that revisits the story of Miguel Ángel Blanco, a Basque councillor who was abducted and murdered by the separatist group ETA in 1997.
The film, produced by Nadie es Perfecto Producciones under Kiko Martínez’s direction, will feature insights from notable journalists Jon Sistiaga and Jimmy Guerra, who will contribute their testimonies. This collaboration aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Blanco’s murder, an event that significantly influenced public sentiment against ETA. Following Blanco’s death, thousands of citizens took to the streets in protest, marking a pivotal moment in the separatist movement. ETA officially disbanded in 2018.
Filming for Blanco is scheduled to commence in September, with a release date set for 2027 to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of Blanco’s passing. According to Nadie es Perfecto, the film will not only explore the political and social ramifications of these events but will also highlight the human aspect of a tragedy that united millions against terrorism.
Nadie es Perfecto, founded in 2000, has produced over 40 films, documentaries, and television series, including recent titles such as Fenómenas (2023) by Carlos Therón, Disco, Ibiza, Locomía (2024) by Kike Maíllo, and Mala Influencia (2022) by Chloé Wallace. The company is also preparing to release three new productions: Pioneras. Solo Querían Jugar, directed by Marta López Díaz; Looking for Michael, by Juana Macías; and Perfectos Conocidos, by Javier Fesser.
Viscarret’s previous project, Patria, was HBO’s first Spanish original series, which depicted the personal and political fallout of ETA’s violent actions on two estranged women.
