Exploring the Life and Legacy of Soccer Legend Johan Cruyff in the New Docuseries
New Documentary Series on Soccer Legend Johan Cruyff Set to Premiere
An exclusive first look at the upcoming documentary series Cruyff, produced by Box to Box, reveals an intimate exploration of the life and impact of Dutch soccer icon Johan Cruyff. The four-part series features insights from notable figures in soccer, including Pep Guardiola, Xavi Hernández, Dennis Bergkamp, and Ruud Gullit.
Box to Box, known for its work on Formula 1: Drive to Survive, is collaborating with Dutch production company Lusus. The filmmakers gained unprecedented access to the Cruyff family’s private archives, which include never-before-seen home movies and deeply personal audio recordings made by Cruyff in his final months. These unique materials serve as a narrative thread, allowing viewers to hear the soccer star’s reflections on his life.
In a significant departure from traditional portrayals, the series also features candid testimonials from Cruyff’s lifelong partner, Danny, and children Jordi, Chantal, and Susila, addressing aspects of his personal life that have rarely been shared publicly. Jordi stated, “For many years our family kept much of Johan’s private world out of the spotlight. This series gave us the opportunity to tell the story in a more complete way and to share the man we knew with the world.”
Johan Cruyff, who passed away in 2016, is celebrated as one of the greatest players in soccer history. Throughout his illustrious career, he won the Ballon d’Or three times and contributed significantly to clubs like Ajax and Barcelona, as well as captaining the Netherlands national team. His managerial stints at Ajax and Barcelona further solidified his legacy in the sport.
Director Sam Blair emphasized the profound influence Cruyff had not only on soccer but also on broader perspectives within and beyond the sport. “Cruyff changed the way football is played, but what fascinated us was how his ideas extended far beyond the game, asking us to see the familiar in radically new ways,” Blair remarked. “Through extraordinary access to his family, their private archives, and the recordings he made in the final months of his life, we were able to uncover the man behind that revolution.”
Previous works by Box to Box include acclaimed sports biopics such as Senna and Diego Maradona. The Dutch public broadcaster NPO will air Cruyff, with a premiere event slated for Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Arena, where tens of thousands are expected to attend a public screening.
Danny Goldman from Goldridge Media will manage the distribution of the documentary, with negotiations ongoing with international broadcasters and streaming platforms.
