Explore the New Trail at Elephant Hill in El Sereno
New Public Trail Opens at Elephant Hill in El Sereno
Residents of El Sereno now have the opportunity to explore a newly opened public trail at Elephant Hill, alongside expanded protected open spaces in the area. The project, executed by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) in collaboration with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the community group Save Elephant Hill, features a 0.75-mile trail, with additional land parcels secured for public use.
This initiative was partially funded by a $700,000 grant from the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District, aiming to enhance access to natural areas in a neighborhood historically underserved in park resources.
"The new Elephant Hill Open Space trail is the first official trail specifically for public use on Elephant Hill in El Sereno," said Elva Yanez, board president of Save Elephant Hill. "While the public has informally accessed the 10 acres of parkland managed by the MRCA for generations, hiking, birding, and nature exploration will now be safer and more enjoyable."
Officials also noted the project has expanded protected areas, preserving native habitats throughout the region. Currently, Elephant Hill consists of a mix of privately owned parcels, and efforts are ongoing to acquire additional land for conservation purposes.
Constructed by the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, the trail meanders through steep terrain, incorporating switchbacks and drainage features, and was developed over several years with input from the community.
Furthermore, the project includes funding for increased ranger patrols, improved signage, and infrastructure enhancements to address safety concerns and safeguard the area’s natural resources.
Community leaders emphasize that this project reflects a larger commitment to ensure equitable access to open spaces across Los Angeles County while protecting environmentally sensitive land. The trail is located at 4403 Pueblo Ave. and will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
