Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne in 1952, displaying a variety of royal tiaras throughout her reign. Among the most notable include the Imperial State Crown, which signifies the conclusion of a coronation and the commencement of a new reign, and several other headpieces personally commissioned by the queen, such as the Brazilian Aquamarine Tiara and the Burmese Ruby Tiara, crafted from her jewel collection.
Throughout her time as sovereign, the queen exhibited several preferred pieces, frequently appearing in the Vladimir Tiara, Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara, and the Diamond Diadem. The latter was often chosen over the Imperial State Crown during significant events like the State Opening of Parliament.
In a 2018 BBC One documentary titled "The Coronation," Queen Elizabeth shared insights about her 1953 coronation experience, particularly regarding the substantial weight of the Imperial State Crown, which approached three pounds. “You can’t look down to read the speech; you have to take the speech up,” she remarked. “If you did, your neck would break — it would fall off. So there are some disadvantages to crowns, but otherwise they’re quite important things.”
Here’s a closer look at some of Queen Elizabeth’s most iconic crowns:
