Explore Nia DaCosta’s Fresh Perspective on Ibsen’s Classic in the Screenplay for ‘Hedda’
Tessa Thompson Takes Center Stage in Groundbreaking Adaptation of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler
In a bold reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play, director Kalia DaCosta presents Hedda, featuring Tessa Thompson in the titular role. The film, set in 1950s London, follows Hedda as she grapples with societal constraints. On one pivotal night filled with scandal and jealousy at a lavish party, she decides to upend her world. Acclaimed actors Nina Hoss, Imogen Poots, and Tom Bateman round out the cast.
Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, the film first made waves during its awards-qualifying run before becoming available on Prime Video at the end of October. Thompson’s performance has earned her nominations for Best Actress from several prestigious organizations, including the Golden Globes, Spirit Awards, and Gotham Film Awards.
An important departure from the original play is the change in Hedda’s romantic interest. In DaCosta’s adaptation, Hedda’s love interest is a woman, Eileen, portrayed by Hoss. This reinterpretation allows for a deeper exploration of the struggles faced by brilliant women who are often overlooked. DaCosta explains, “If this character were a woman, you’d really understand the soul suffering of being brilliant and being ignored … being so much more than everyone else around you and being told, ‘No thank you,’ because you’re a woman.”
DaCosta, whose diverse portfolio includes works like The Marvels, Candyman, and the indie film Little Woods, expresses her passion for adaptations, identifying herself as “a big theater head.”
