Exciting Highlights and Special Guests at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony
The 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics officially commence on Friday, with an opening ceremony featuring performances by Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli. Preliminary heats in various sports, including curling, luge, snowboarding, alpine skiing, and women’s hockey, have already begun.
Set to begin at 8 p.m. local time (11 a.m. PT), the inauguration will primarily take place at Milan’s iconic San Siro stadium, known for its 76,000-seat capacity and historic association with football and opera.
Celebrations are also planned in Cortina d’Ampezzo, about 250 miles northeast of Milan, along with smaller events in Livigno, Bormio, Tesero, Predazzo, and Antholz-Anterselva.
The Milan-Cortina opening follows the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics ceremony, which was notable for taking place on the River Seine, outside a traditional stadium. French theater director Thomas Jolly’s approach for that event sparked significant controversy due to provocative live vignettes.
“Simplicity & Authenticity”
The Milan-Cortina ceremony, themed “Harmony,” aims for a more subdued experience, entrusted to Marco Balich of Balich Wonder Studio, who has a rich history of producing Olympic ceremonies. Balich, a seasoned professional, has previously contributed to significant Olympic events, including those in Turin and Rio.
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Balich emphasized a focus on celebrating “Made in Italy” while highlighting “simplicity and authenticity.” In a departure from tradition, two Olympic flame cauldrons will be lit during the ceremony—one in Milan and another in Cortina—both designed to resonate with the musical compositions of contemporary Italian composer Roberto Cacciapaglia.
The innovative design for these cauldrons pays homage to Leonardo da Vinci, featuring over 1,400 components, and is described by Balich as a tribute to the artist’s lasting impact on Milan. He also referenced other iconic figures such as Bruno Munari and Giorgio Armani, representing the city’s rich cultural heritage.
Reports from local media suggest Carey will perform the classic ‘Volare’ during the dress rehearsal.

LA28 chairman Casey Wasserman, under scrutiny for his ties to the Epstein files, is expected to attend the Games, alongside Snoop Dogg, who will serve as a special correspondent for NBC and has shared footage from Milan’s Ice Skating Arena.

Alongside entertainment, the Games have garnered political attention, with Vice President JD Vance leading the U.S. presidential delegation. This has prompted discussions regarding potential tensions with international dignitaries, including unconfirmed attendance from French President Emmanuel Macron due to diplomatic strains.
Confirmed attendees include Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, and others. However, local backlash over the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel has surfaced amid ongoing protests regarding their conduct in the U.S.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani assured that only three ICE agents would be on site, operating from a secured location. While local officials aim to downplay ICE’s visibility, pushback from Italian lawmakers has highlighted broader concerns about the agency’s history and its implications for Italy’s diplomatic stance.
Recent protests against ICE in Milan drew about a thousand participants, demonstrating solidarity with those affected by the agency’s actions in the U.S. These protests are part of a series of demonstrations scheduled during the Olympics, aimed at bringing attention to various issues, including the impact of the Games on the local community.
In a separate development, Tajani noted that authorities had thwarted a cyber-attack linked to Russian sources targeting the Winter Olympics, indicating ongoing security concerns.
