Eva Green Joins the Cast of ‘Wednesday’ Season 3 as Aunt Ophelia
Eva Green Joins Cast of Netflix’s Wednesday as Ophelia Addams
Netflix’s hit series Wednesday has officially cast Eva Green as Ophelia Addams, the troubled sister of Morticia Addams. This revelation follows the introduction of Ophelia in the first season and adds a new layer of intrigue to the show, as Green’s character was previously seen only from the back in the closing moments of the Season 2 finale.
This casting represents a significant addition to the upcoming third season of Wednesday, which received a green light last summer, prior to the premiere of its second season. Green’s role concludes speculation regarding Ophelia’s character, dismissing earlier fan theories that suggested Lady Gaga might portray her.
Ophelia, resembling her niece Wednesday—played by Jenna Ortega—has a dark past, having strained her psychic abilities and subsequently been committed to Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital by her and Morticia’s mother, Hester Frump. Initially believed to have disappeared, Ophelia is reintroduced when Wednesday, through a journal belonging to Morticia, envisions a woman with long blond hair and a flower crown.
In a dramatic scene, Hester is later shown walking to the basement of her mansion where Ophelia, still cloaked in mystery, is seen locked in a cell, dressed in red while inscribing “Wednesday must die” on the wall with her own blood.
Ophelia’s distinctive long blond hair sets her apart from Morticia’s iconic gothic style. In the 1960s Addams Family series, Carolyn Jones portrayed both characters, wearing a blonde wig for Ophelia.
Based on creations by Charles Addams, Wednesday follows the supernatural sleuthing adventures of Wednesday Addams as she navigates her years at Nevermore Academy. The series boasts a talented ensemble, including Ortega as Wednesday, alongside Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, and others, with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán reprising their roles as Morticia and Gomez Addams, respectively.
The second season of Wednesday, which was released in two parts in August and September, achieved remarkable success, ranking as the fourth most-watched English-language series on Netflix, with the first season still holding the top spot.
The series is co-created and written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who also serve as executive producers and showrunners, with Tim Burton taking on directing and executive producer roles. MGM Television produces the series.
This marks Eva Green’s return to genre television following her acclaimed performance in Showtime’s horror drama Penny Dreadful, which garnered her a Golden Globe nomination. Green is set to appear in upcoming films including The Trees, Blood on Snow, and Just Play Dead. She is represented by UTA and Charles Collier of Chalco5 Square.
