Eric Swalwell Steps Down from Congress
Congressman Eric Swalwell Resigns Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
California Congressman Eric Swalwell announced his resignation on Monday as he faces growing scrutiny over allegations of sexual misconduct. The announcement follows claims made over the weekend that have raised serious concerns about his conduct while in office.
In a statement shared via social media, Swalwell, who has served in Congress for over a decade, expressed regret for his past actions. He stated, "I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past," while also vowing to address what he described as "serious, false allegations."
The controversy escalated after a former staffer accused Swalwell in a San Francisco Chronicle article and during a CNN interview of engaging in multiple sexual encounters during her tenure in his office. The staffer alleged that Swalwell sexually assaulted her on two occasions when she was too intoxicated to provide consent. These claims, which have not been verified by NBC News, were echoed by several other women who also accused the congressman of sexual misconduct.
Swalwell’s resignation came just hours after the House Ethics Committee announced it would investigate the allegations, a move that could lead to his expulsion from the House if the accusations were substantiated.
At 45 years old, Swalwell recently withdrew from the race for California governor, a decision he made shortly after the allegations surfaced.
