Elle Fanning Shares Her Thoughts on Nudity in ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles’: It’s Not the Main Focus
Elle Fanning Discusses Portrayal of Nudity in Apple TV+’s Margo’s Got Money Troubles
Actress Elle Fanning, known for her role in Margo’s Got Money Troubles, shared insights into her approach to depicting nudity in the series adaptation of Rufi Thorpe’s novel. In a recent discussion surrounding the show, Fanning noted the importance of thoughtful representation in her performance.
Fanning, an Oscar nominee, expressed that she is "not very modest" regarding nudity on screen and takes pride in her portrayal of Margo, an undergrad who becomes pregnant by her English professor and turns to OnlyFans to support herself. "I feel like I kind of broke that down in The Great,” she said, referencing her previous work as Catherine the Great in the Hulu series. “I was like, ‘I’ve kind of already done this.’”
With regard to her latest role, Fanning emphasized that the nudity featured is not overly sexualized. “I’m really proud of how the nudity is depicted on Margo’s Got Money Troubles, because it’s not in an overly sexualized way at all," she stated.
She further elaborated on the context of certain scenes, explaining, “A lot of it is actually just having to do with the necessities of motherhood, the need to feed your child and breastfeed.” This theme is later contrasted with Margo’s experiences on OnlyFans, illustrating a shift in her relationship with her body.
Fanning pointed out that the nudity in the series is “never the focal point of the scene,” which she found compelling. She shared a humorous anecdote about her preparation for certain scenes, saying, “A lot of the time, I did have prosthetics to make [my boobs] look like breastfeeding boobs.” She described the unusual experience of preparing for a scene, realizing, “I can’t walk out. This isn’t a shirt.”
In Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Fanning joins a notable cast, including Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nick Offerman, Michael Angarano, Thaddea Graham, and Greg Kinnear. New episodes are available to stream on Wednesdays on Apple TV+.
