Ella Purnell has joined the cast of the upcoming thriller The Return of Stanley Atwell, which stars Nicholas Galitzine. The film is produced by Hera Pictures, known for its BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning projects, and is co-produced with John Gore Studios. Production is set to commence shortly in the UK and Malta.
Written and directed by Brian Welsh, whose credits include Beats and Black Mirror, The Return of Stanley Atwell is based on an original story by Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, who serves as an executive producer. Liza Marshall produces the film for Hera Pictures, with John Gore producing for John Gore Studios. WME Independent is co-representing US rights.
This project marks Welsh’s second collaboration with Soderbergh, following their acclaimed debut with Beats, as well as his second partnership with Liza Marshall and Hera Pictures after the notable BBC drama What It Feels Like for a Girl.

The film’s plot centers on Stanley Atwell (Galitzine), who is presumed dead but suddenly reappears at the family estate after escaping a decade of captivity. His return ignites turmoil as his sister Beatrice battles for his inheritance, while his friend Pamela (Purnell) manipulates the situation to gain control over the Atwell fortune. Themes of betrayal, passion, and deception come to the forefront as family loyalty is tested, raising the question: how far are family members willing to go to protect their wealth and status?
Welsh commented, “Ella has an incredible ability to move between vulnerability, humour and danger. She’s a wonderfully versatile actor, and I’m thrilled to have her joining Nicholas in The Return of Stanley Atwell. It’s a brilliant combination, and I look forward to seeing Ella make the role her own.”
Liza Marshall, Producer and Founder of Hera Pictures, expressed her enthusiasm as well, stating, “Ella is a remarkable talent whose performances are consistently both mercurial and deeply affecting. We’re thrilled she’s leading the film alongside Nicholas and can’t wait to see her bring Pamela to life.”
John Gore added, “Ella Purnell brings a magnetic screen presence, remarkable emotional nuance, and an instinct for making complex characters feel utterly authentic. We are thrilled to have her onboard and delighted to collaborate with Hera Pictures and Brian Welsh on this bold and provocative story.”
Additional executive producers include Hilary Strong and Francis Hopkinson for John Gore Studios, alongside Protagonist Pictures. The film is produced by Hera Pictures, co-produced, and equity financed by John Gore Studios, known for The Duchess & I and The Queen of Fashion. Protagonist Pictures will manage international sales.
Purnell is currently featured in the second season of Fallout on Amazon Prime Video. She is also set to reprise her role in season 2 of the Sky and Starz series Sweetpea, for which she serves as an executive producer. In addition, she will appear in the British comedy horror film The Scurry with Paapa Essiedu. Recently, Purnell was cast in the film That Time We Met alongside Pete Davidson.
