El Monte Police Department’s Operation Blue Santa Supports Families in Need
El Monte Police Department Launches ‘Operation Blue Santa’ for Families in Need
LOS ANGELES – This week, the El Monte Police Department has revived its heartwarming initiative, "Operation Blue Santa," aimed at supporting families facing hardships during the holiday season.
Detective Adam Girgle is donning a blue Santa suit for the second year in a row to deliver joy and essential items to various families in the community. His role is more than just festive; it symbolizes the department’s commitment to giving back.
"We go to radio calls and we see what kind of issues our citizens face. So it’s kind of a no-brainer, we raise some money and we give back to the community," said Detective Girgle.
A total of 35 families have been carefully selected based on their specific needs. Among them is a 71-year-old grandfather who recently took custody of his three grandchildren. "I’m starting over at 71, but I’m not about to let my grandbabies be raised in foster care," he shared, according to Paula Rodriguez, Executive Director of the El Monte Police Officers Foundation.
The initiative’s offerings extend beyond toys and treats. Families also receive food, grocery gift cards, and some are granted financial assistance.
Detective Girgle highlighted the importance of the program, especially in light of ongoing community challenges. "Especially with everything going on this year with immigration and benefits getting cut, we just want to let you know our department supports the community and we’re giving back to the community that supports us," he stated.
The operational aspects of Blue Santa’s deliveries are facilitated using a SWAT bearcat, which is creatively described as Blue Santa’s sleigh. This ensures that each family receives comprehensive support during this critical time of year.
