Early Buzz for 2026 Pilots: Who’s Leading the Pack on NBC?
NBC to Reintroduce Pilot Season in 2026 with Most Orders Since Pandemic
NBC plans to make broadcasting history in 2026 by reintroducing pilot season, a significant move for the network. This year, NBC has ordered eight pilots—five dramas and three comedies—the highest number from any broadcast network since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, the network is adhering to the traditional pilot production timeline, which typically runs from January to May.
Company screenings, a critical step before final decisions on series pickups, are scheduled for the final week of April. With screenings approaching in two and a half weeks, production of the pilots is still ongoing. Current evaluations are based primarily on preliminary cuts and tapings, with more comprehensive insights expected post-screening.
The shift in pilot production, which saw networks reduce their output compared to the peak volume during the 2000s, is believed to have improved the quality of pilot execution. This has also facilitated the casting of prominent television stars in leading roles amid a competitive talent landscape.
Early reports suggest that NBC’s pilot roster for 2026 is robust, potentially complicating the network’s selection process. There is speculation that if NBC ends up with more pilots deserving of series orders—particularly in the drama category—some may be redirected to its streaming service, Peacock.
Among the pilots generating notable early buzz are a reboot of The Rockford Files featuring David Boreanaz and a single-camera comedy from Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, starring Jake Johnson. The revival of The Rockford Files stands out due to its nostalgic value, while the comedy has already received a substantial production commitment and a California tax credit.
While these two projects shine as early frontrunners, the competition remains unclear. Two additional crime-solving drama pilots, Puzzled, starring Damon Wayans Jr., and an untitled project from Dean Georgaris and John Fox featuring Emily Deschanel, have also garnered positive initial reactions. Furthermore, the multi-camera comedy pilot Newlyweds, with Tèa Leoni and Tim Daly, has received encouraging feedback.
As NBC solidifies its pilot lineup, considerable pressure mounts on existing bubble series such as the drama Brilliant Minds, whose future appears bleak, and The Hunting Party. Similarly, freshman comedies, including Stumble—which is in jeopardy—and The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, boasting a notable team including Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, will also be closely monitored for renewal prospects.
The landscape of NBC’s pilot race will become clearer as more information emerges in the coming weeks.
