Driver Charged with DUI After Crash Injures Track Team Members in Anaheim
Four Teen Track Athletes Released from Hospital Following Accident
In a troubling incident on Wednesday, a 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a crash in Anaheim injured members of a high school track and field team.
The suspect, Anthony Alva-Palafox, who resides in Anaheim, was taken into custody following the collision that occurred shortly before 3 p.m. at the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and North Street. The Anaheim High School track and field team was waiting to cross the street when an orange Toyota Corolla struck them.
According to Anaheim police, the preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling southbound on Harbor Boulevard, proceeding on a green light. The driver apparently veered off the roadway and hit several pedestrians standing on the southwest corner of the intersection. The car ultimately came to a stop against a wall in front of a residential yard.
A total of eight individuals were injured in the incident. By Thursday morning, four of the seven students hospitalized had been released. The students, aged between 16 and 17, were accompanied by their coach during the training run just a few blocks from campus. Anaheim High School officials confirmed that none of the injuries sustained by the students are considered life-threatening.
