Doja Cat Shares Her Journey with Borderline Personality Disorder
Doja Cat Opens Up About Borderline Personality Disorder Diagnosis
Pop sensation Doja Cat has revealed her struggles with mental health, announcing her diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) through a TikTok video on March 13. The 30-year-old artist shared her experiences with the disorder and its impact on her life.
In the video, Doja reflected on her long history of masking her true feelings, stating, “I’ve learned from a very young age to pretend that I like stuff, to pretend that I’m happy, to pretend that I don’t like stuff that I do, to appear like everything is okay. I’ll get it done. And it caught up with me, and I think it always does for people. I’m now struggling with BPD.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, borderline personality disorder affects how individuals perceive themselves and their relationships, leading to intense emotional responses, impulsive behavior, and challenges in daily functioning.
Doja admitted that her struggles with BPD have been ongoing, describing the experience as "agonizing." “I’ve been in therapy for years now, and I am so relieved and so proud of myself,” she continued. “I’ve made it so far and I still make mistakes, but it is an eight-year process of curing, treatment, and healing.”
This is not the first time Doja Cat has discussed her mental health publicly. In a 2021 interview with Rolling Stone, she revealed her battle with ADHD, which led to her dropping out of high school at age 16. “It felt like I was stuck in one spot and everybody else was progressing constantly,” she noted at the time.
In her recent TikTok post, she also voiced support for fellow artist Chappell Roan, praising her authenticity during a recent encounter with paparazzi at Paris Fashion Week. “I had to learn how to be honest,” Doja explained. “I had to learn how to be honest with myself. I lied to myself for years, for most of my life, and to see her sit there, and I love it. I love that she can do that without hurting people.”
Doja Cat expressed admiration for Roan’s courage in embracing her discomfort and standing up for herself, emphasizing the importance of honesty in both their journeys. “She can be uncomfortable, comfortably in front of people, and protect herself and be honest,” she remarked.
This candid discussion shines a light on the challenges faced by those experiencing mental health issues and the value of open dialogue in reducing stigma.
