Doja Cat Shares Her Desire for a Break from Music to Explore New Passions

Doja Cat is contemplating a hiatus from her music career, following the release of five studio albums and a string of hits on the Billboard Hot 100. In a recent cover story for Elle UK, published on May 13, she expressed interest in taking a few years off to explore other creative outlets.
During her discussion with the magazine, Doja shared her philosophy on balancing work and personal interests. “I demand time from my team,” she noted. “They’ve helped me to find pockets between the really busy moments.”
“I think I want to take three years off,” she continued. “I want to just do whatever.”
Currently, she is focused on projects like creating a mural and finally furnishing her home, which has been largely empty for several years. “There’s been nothing in here for four years or five,” she stated.
Doja Cat last released an album in 2025, achieving a No. 4 position on the Billboard 200 with Vie. She is currently on her Tour Ma Vie World Tour, which is set to run from November through early December.
After taking a brief break, she is preparing for a performance in Kigali, Rwanda.
In her conversation with Elle, Doja also discussed her distinct sense of humor in music, drawing parallels with prominent artists. “Nicki Minaj, Drake, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, these people are not comedians, but they are,” she explained. “They could write a stand-up set if they wanted to, but music is much more fun… I learned that from Jay-Z. I watched an interview where he said irony is incredibly important when it comes to hip-hop and rap.”
She further elaborated on the impact of her borderline personality disorder diagnosis—shared with fans in March—on her dating life. “If I have a boyfriend, and he leaves just to run errands, my brain thinks he’s breaking up with me,” she revealed. “And this is because my dad left me when I was little… I have to scrape against it and teach myself that that’s not happening to me. I’m safe.”
