Dodgers’ New Arrivals Edwin Diaz and Kyle Tucker Shine in Early Games
Dodgers’ Offseason Acquisitions Make Immediate Impact
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ two most significant offseason signings have quickly begun to pay off. On Friday night, the two-time defending World Series champions secured a 5-4 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks, bolstered by standout performances from newcomer Edwin Diaz and Kyle Tucker.
Diaz made his mark by earning his first save in his debut, while Tucker contributed a crucial single that drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.
As Diaz took the field for the ninth inning, the atmosphere electrified with the sounds of trumpeter Tatiana Tate, who performed Timmy Trumpet’s “Narcos.” Wearing Diaz’s No. 3 jersey, she brought a unique energy reminiscent of Diaz’s time with the New York Mets, where he previously converted 28 of 31 save opportunities last season. "It’s really cool because it’s another way to keep the fans involved in the game until the ninth inning," said infielder Miguel Rojas. "Having Sugar in the ninth is always going to be special."
Despite the excitement surrounding Tate’s performance, it’s anticipated that fans may hear a recorded version of Diaz’s entrance music in future games, as she is not expected to be a regular performer throughout the season.
The Dodgers also opened their season with an 8-2 triumph over the Diamondbacks on Opening Day at Dodger Stadium. With Diaz striking out two batters and walking one, he is poised to become an essential asset for the team.
“I always get a little bit nervous when I come into the game, but I was excited, too,” Diaz stated. “Coming in in a one-run game was really big for me. I want to set it down right away and help this team to win.”
Unlike their previous two seasons, where the Dodgers lacked a defined closer, Diaz brings both reliability and a proven track record to the bullpen. The last pitcher to hold that role for the Dodgers was Kenley Jansen, who led the National League in saves twice during his tenure.
“It’s going to be a lot on Sugar because he’s going to have to be under a lot of pressure, but he’s the right guy for the task,” Rojas noted.
Manager Dave Roberts initially doubted the Dodgers’ chances of landing Diaz after he opted out of a lucrative contract with the Mets. However, after a 45-minute video call with Diaz and the front office, Roberts felt optimistic. “It was selling ourselves and talking about how much we valued him,” he recalled. A significant influence on Diaz’s decision was his younger brother, Alexis, who joined the Dodgers last May.
“The comfort level and the way we treated Alexis certainly helped in making that decision,” Roberts added.
Diaz himself highlighted the Dodgers’ potential for success. “A lot of good players here. If everyone stays healthy, this team has a chance to win a three-peat,” he said.
Tucker also made his presence felt, going 1-for-3 with the game-winning single and a stolen base. He had notched his first hit and RBI just a day earlier in an 8-2 comeback victory against the Diamondbacks. Tucker, who signed a $240 million, four-year contract after leaving the Chicago Cubs, expressed excitement for joining the Dodgers’ well-established environment.
“I’m excited for them to have the opportunity to play in this environment and feel part of the family,” Rojas remarked. “They’re looking closely at how fun it’s been.”
