Doc Talk Podcast Discusses Oscar Nominations and Highlights Sundance Documentary “Ghost” Story
The recent announcement of the Oscar nominations has brought significant recognition to the Sundance Film Festival, with all five nominees for Best Documentary Feature having premiered at last January’s event. This reinforces Sundance’s reputation as a crucial platform for showcasing award-contending nonfiction films.
As Sundance 2026 continues, attention turns to two standout documentaries featured at the festival: Valerie Veatch’s Ghost in the Machine and Rachael J. Morrison’s Joybubbles.
Watch on Deadline
Ghost in the Machine investigates the biases and power dynamics present in artificial intelligence. The Sundance program describes it as a “mind-expanding investigative essay documentary” that explores the philosophical, cultural, and political factors fueling the global AI movement.
Joybubbles, in contrast, delves into vintage landline telephone technology. The film’s logline notes, “Blind Joybubbles finds he can control phones by whistling specific tones. His discovery, born from loneliness, becomes foundational to hacking culture and tech history.”
Ghost in the Machine is set to premiere in the NEXT section of the festival, while Joybubbles will be showcased in the U.S. Documentary Competition. Doc Talk’s Ridley has characterized both films as “inventive, creative, and clever,” predicting they will continue to resonate long after their Sundance debuts.
