Disney is Making a Live-Action ‘Gaston’ Movie with Writer Dave Callaham and Producer Michelle Rejwan
Dave Callaham to Script New Disney Gaston Film
Screenwriter Dave Callaham has been tapped to write the script for an upcoming film centered on Gaston, the iconic character from Disney’s animated classic, Beauty and the Beast. Michelle Rejwan is set to produce the project, although no director has been announced at this time. The screenplay will be based on a previous draft by Kate Herron and Briony Redman.
Gaston originally appeared in Disney’s 1992 animated film as an arrogant hunter with unrequited feelings for Belle, the story’s protagonist. He ultimately becomes the primary antagonist to the Beast. In 2017, Disney released a live-action adaptation of the film featuring Luke Evans as Gaston. Following the film’s billion-dollar success, plans for a TV series focused on the character were discussed, with Evans expected to reprise his role, but that project was ultimately scrapped.
While specifics about the new film’s plot remain unclear, sources indicate that it will present an original take on Gaston, featuring a new actor. The project is said to incorporate "swashbuckling" elements, and insiders suggest the studio is enthusiastic about the direction.
Michelle Rejwan has a well-established relationship with Disney, having previously overseen live-action projects at Lucasfilm. Her credits include Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Dave Callaham brings extensive experience in developing high-profile tentpole projects, having written for renowned characters such as Godzilla, King Kong, and Spider-Man. His notable works include Godzilla x Kong, The Expendables, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Callaham is represented by UTA and Northstar.
