Dianna Russini Resigns from The Athletic Amid Controversy
Dianna Russini, a prominent sports journalist, has resigned from The Athletic just days after the outlet initiated an investigation into her relationship with New England Patriots head coach, Mike Vrabel. This decision comes following speculation surrounding photos of the pair taken at an Arizona resort.
On April 10, just four days before her resignation, former ESPN colleague Jon “Stugotz” Wiener extended an invitation to Russini to join him on his Fox Sports radio show, should her employment with The Athletic end. “I support my friends, I don’t bail on my friends, especially at their worst professional time in their history,” Wiener stated.
Russini, 43, previously worked at ESPN from 2015 to 2023 before transitioning to The Athletic as an NFL insider. The publication initially supported her after Page Six published photos depicting her alongside Vrabel; however, the company later decided to investigate their relationship. Both Russini and Vrabel, who are married to others, have insisted that their interactions were innocent and casual.
In her resignation letter, Russini expressed her commitment to professionalism, stating, “I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career.” She acknowledged The Athletic’s early support but criticized the media speculation that ensued, which she mentioned had become disconnected from the facts.
Further addressing the pressure of public scrutiny, Russini added, “I have no interest in submitting to a public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept.”
Steven Ginsberg, executive editor of The Athletic, communicated in a staff memo that the investigation would proceed despite Russini’s departure. Ginsberg mentioned, “When this situation was brought to our attention last week, there were clear concerns,” and noted that as new information emerged, additional questions arose that warranted a thorough review.
Ginsberg did not disclose what specific information had influenced the course of the investigation. He concluded his memo by thanking his team for maintaining high journalistic standards amid the unfolding situation, emphasizing a desire to focus on delivering quality sports reporting.
