Deandre Ayton Shines as Lakers Overcome the Raptors
Lakers Bounce Back with Key Players Returning in Victory Over Raptors
The Los Angeles Lakers returned to full strength on Sunday, as Coach JJ Redick welcomed back multiple key players during a critical moment in their schedule. Luka Doncic, Deandre Ayton, and Jaxson Hayes all made their comebacks for the matchup against the Toronto Raptors, leaving only Austin Reaves sidelined due to a calf strain.
In a significant turnaround, the Lakers secured a 110-93 victory at Crypto.com Arena, showcasing their potential as a cohesive unit. The trio of Doncic, Ayton, and LeBron James each scored at least 20 points, underscoring the team’s offensive depth. Ayton led the charge with an impressive double-double, amassing 25 points and 13 rebounds, while shooting a perfect 10 for 10 from the field.
Doncic also made notable contributions with 25 points and seven assists, and James added 24 points alongside seven assists. From the bench, Rui Hachimura chipped in 10 points to aid a Lakers team that had struggled recently, losing five of their last six games.
The first half saw Doncic and Ayton dominate, despite Doncic facing foul trouble which led to a technical foul in the first quarter. He managed to notch 18 points and five assists in just 24 minutes. A clutch three-pointer from Doncic with just 0.7 seconds left in the second quarter allowed the Lakers to take a narrow lead into halftime.
Ayton’s energy was palpable throughout the game as he consistently found opportunities to score. He finished the first half with 12 points on six-for-six shooting and seven rebounds.
Looking ahead, the Lakers are set to embark on the "Grammys Trip," an eight-game road stretch beginning Tuesday, which will test their resilience. The schedule includes games against Denver, the Clippers, Dallas, Chicago, Cleveland, Washington, New York, and Brooklyn.
Reflecting on their recent stretch, Coach Redick noted, "We finished five games in eight nights… so it’s been a difficult stretch, particularly with injuries and certain games." He also mentioned adjusting the team rotation to include 10 players against the Raptors, a shift from the typical nine-man lineup.
All players contributed significantly during critical moments, keeping the Lakers fresh and energized, which will be essential as the season progresses. Redick acknowledged the challenges posed by the NBA Cup tournament, stating, "This in-season tournament cup with that break has just created a very imbalanced cadence of games."
With a renewed roster and upcoming challenges on the horizon, the Lakers aim to build momentum from this victory as they navigate a demanding schedule.
