Da’Vine Joy Randolph Shares Her Exciting Conversations with Zoë Kravitz About Continuing ‘High Fidelity’
Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph reflects on her evolving career, notably recalling her time in the Hulu series High Fidelity, which she starred in alongside Zoë Kravitz. The show featured Randolph as Cherise, a close friend to Kravitz’s character, Robyn “Rob” Brooks.
In response to a question about the possibility of reviving the series after its cancellation, Randolph expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Absolutely. We all feel the same way. Zoë and I talk about it all the time, like, ‘How can we figure this out?’ Give it back to the people, but really give it back to us, because we just really love it.”
Yet, she acknowledged the complexity of bringing a project back to life, noting, “But it’s a really tricky one, because you’re trying to recapture lightning in a bottle. Sometimes you have to just let things be what it is organically and trust in the process to find the next thing.”
Background on the Series
Launched in 2020, High Fidelity provided a contemporary gender-swapped reinterpretation of the 2000 romantic comedy featuring John Cusack, itself adapted from Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel. The story follows Rob, a music-loving record store owner in Brooklyn, as she navigates her past relationships. Despite positive reviews from both critics and audiences, the series was canceled after just one season, leaving fans with a cliffhanger ending. In the finale, Rob chooses to be with Jake Lacy’s Clyde, after grappling with her feelings for Mac (Kingsley Ben-Adir), who ominously predicts a mere “9%” chance for their relationship to thrive.
Kravitz has publicly expressed her disappointment over the show’s abrupt end. In an interview with Elle earlier this year, she revealed her ongoing efforts to revive the series, sharing, “That’s where I really learned about producing and editing and writing, and man, I’m sad. I keep on going back to Hulu and trying to get them to re-up it, but they won’t. They’re not interested.”
