David Tennant has started the new year with a significant change.
The actor, along with his wife Georgia Moffett, has officially changed their surnames to reflect the stage name the Doctor Who star has used throughout his career, PEOPLE has confirmed.
Previously known as David McDonald, the 54-year-old actor adopted the name Tennant early in his career to distinguish himself from an existing actor with the same name, as reported by The Independent in 2005.
Now, both he and his wife, married in 2011, are officially recognized as David Tennant and Georgia Tennant. This change is documented on a UK government website where their business, Sandyboy Limited, is registered.

His wife was formerly registered as Georgia Elizabeth Moffett and is now officially Georgia Elizabeth Tennant.
Both underwent identity verification checks for the name changes, with David completing his on January 5 and Georgia completing hers the following day, as noted on the government site.
David and Georgia first met on the set of Doctor Who, where he starred from 2005 to 2010. She played his genetically engineered daughter, Jenny, in the 2008 episode “The Doctor’s Daughter.”
The couple married three years later and now have five children together: Ty, 23, Olive, 14, Wilfred, 12, Doris, 10, and Birdie, 5. Georgia’s son Ty was from a previous relationship, and David adopted him in 2011.

“My baby is almost a year old, and I adopted my wife’s boy last year as well, so I became a father twice in six months,” he remarked to Absolute Radio in March 2012. “That’s got to be something of a record, hasn’t it?”
Some of their children are already pursuing careers in acting. Ty appeared in the War of the Worlds series and played young Aegon in House of the Dragon season 1.
Their eldest daughter, Olive, also ventured into acting with a debut in Belfast and is set to appear alongside David in an upcoming project.
Olive is cast as David’s onscreen daughter, Camilla Baddingham, in season 2 of Rivals, a Disney+ series based on Jilly Cooper’s novel, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the network.
