Daveed Diggs Shares Why Fatherhood Is the Most Fulfilling Experience of His Life

Daveed Diggs has embraced his role as a father wholeheartedly, sharing insights at the premiere of his new film, In the Blink of an Eye, during the Sundance Film Festival on January 26. The acclaimed actor expressed his joy and evolution in this new chapter of his life.

“It’s the best thing I’ve ever done — and it’s not even close, and I’ve lived a charmed life since,” Diggs said, reflecting on the birth of his son in March 2024 with Emmy Raver-Lampman, also known for her work in Hamilton.

He elaborated on how fatherhood has influenced his perspective on work, stating, “It just felt like an immediate focusing agent. Sometimes it’s hard to be like, ‘Oh, what should I do right now?’ And then suddenly, the clarity arrived: ‘If it doesn’t make [my son’s] life better, it doesn’t matter.’”

Diggs, who earned a Tony Award for his performance in Hamilton, noted that the experience of becoming a parent has provided “so clear” a sense of his priorities. “In all the ways I thought it would be tough, it actually has been really clarifying and amazing,” he remarked.

Diggs and Raver-Lampman initially crossed paths in 2015 while working on Hamilton and began dating a year later. They announced the birth of their son privately in March 2024. Raver-Lampman celebrated the occasion on social media with a heartfelt message, noting, “Dear baby, you have forever changed us. Our hearts are filled with a kind of love we never thought possible.”

At Sundance, Diggs also shared that he sought parenting advice from his co-star Rashida Jones during filming. “Every time they said, ‘Cut,’ I’d ask her, ‘So I need more tips. How do you balance being an artist and having a baby?’” he recalled.

In the Blink of an Eye explores themes of connection through intertwining storylines across time, featuring Diggs and Jones as anthropologist students navigating their relationship. The film, which also stars Kate McKinnon, will be released for streaming on Hulu starting February 27.
