Renowned musician Dave Matthews has directed sharp criticism at the Trump administration following the tragic shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis.
In a poignant Instagram video released on January 9, the 59-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee condemned both President Donald Trump and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the wake of Good’s death, which occurred earlier that week.
“I don’t want my taxes to pay for ICE, to masked thugs to roam our streets and terrorize our communities and rip families apart,” Matthews stated as he walked through his neighborhood on his birthday. “We should be taking care of each other. We should be minding each other. We should be housing the homeless. We shouldn’t be, you know, throwing people to the ground.”
Good, 37, was shot while inside her vehicle during an ICE operation on January 7. According to footage of the incident, she attempted to drive away moments before the shooting. Officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have stated that she was attempting to “run over” the officer involved.
“Which brings me to Renee Nicole Good,” Matthews continued, describing her as “murdered in front of her fellow citizens in Minneapolis, murdered in the streets.” He emphasized that, despite the administration’s narrative, the videos reveal the truth.
He noted, “Maybe if they show you one and they slow it down and they tell you where to look, you might think, maybe there’s a chance, maybe there’s a chance that the gunman was felt threatened. But from most angles, near and far, it looks like she was trying to get away, and he shot her three times in the head, murdered in cold blood.”
In response to Good’s death, residents in Minneapolis have come together to mourn and protest ICE’s presence in the city. Mayor Jacob Frey has called for federal agents to withdraw, stating, “This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed.”
Matthews further criticized U.S. military operations in Venezuela aimed at the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, alleging that they are intended to seize the country’s natural resources. He also accused Trump of threatening similar actions against other nations, suggesting an improper ownership of sovereign states.
The singer-songwriter concluded his video by labeling members of the Trump administration as “deeply dishonest people,” asserting, “These are dark times. F—k ICE.”
