Couple Arrested in Hawaii After Allegedly Shooting at LA County Deputy’s Patrol Car
Attempted Murder Charges Filed in Rolling Hills Estates Shooting
Shane Mahoney, 39, has been charged with attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer following a shooting incident on February 22 in Rolling Hills Estates. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed his arrest, alongside alleged accomplice Arianna Mitchell, 22, who faces a felony count of accessory after the fact.
The charges stem from an incident where Mahoney reportedly fired a rifle from a balcony at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car outside an apartment complex. The bullet struck the rear of the patrol car but miraculously did not injure the deputy, who was inside at the time. Mahoney fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Authorities issued a warrant for Mahoney and Mitchell’s arrest on February 25. They were apprehended in Hawaii on March 3, aided by the Kauai Police Department and U.S. Marshals Service. The couple will be extradited back to Los Angeles.
This violent episode unfolded just before 9 a.m. as the deputy was concluding a call regarding a reckless driver. Surveillance footage, along with ballistic evidence and firearms, was collected during the investigation. Reports indicate that Mahoney and Mitchell traveled to Los Angeles International Airport on February 23, the day after the incident, before boarding a flight to Kauai.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman emphasized the risks faced by law enforcement daily, stating that Mahoney’s actions demonstrated “a profound and callous disregard for the people who live in that community.” Hochman expressed relief that no one was injured during what he labeled an "extremely dangerous attack."
Sheriff Robert G. Luna condemned the shooting as a "deliberate and dangerous attack" on the deputy. He reiterated that violence against law enforcement personnel will not be tolerated, promising relentless pursuit of those who target deputies, regardless of geographical boundaries.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the District Attorney’s Office has yet to announce the suspects’ arraignment date. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Head Deputy District Attorney Geoffrey Lewin.
