Concerns Raised by Actors’ Union Equity Over Working Conditions at ‘Squid Game: The Experience’ in London
Concerns Raised Over Working Conditions at ‘Squid Game: The Experience’
Equity, the performers’ union, has expressed concerns regarding working conditions at Squid Game: The Experience, a live-action adaptation of the popular Netflix series. These issues particularly relate to the rights of performers and stage management during the event’s run from May until January 4.
Luna Entertainment Group, the company behind the experience and a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment, emphasized its commitment to legal obligations and stated it was not aware of any safety issues.
According to a spokesperson for Equity, the organization is troubled by the potential denial of fundamental employment rights for those involved in the production. "This relates to performers and stage management’s worker status in law, which entitles them to paid annual leave, pension enrollment, and a written statement of employment particulars being provided," they said.
The spokesperson further added, "We are also concerned about the producer’s health and safety practices, including safeguarding measures. We would encourage those who worked on Squid Game: The Experience to get in touch with the union so that we can investigate further."
Luna responded, asserting, “We have not been made aware of any concerns around health and safety or safeguarding on Squid Game The Experience. Luna has operated high-profile events and experiences for over ten years and prides itself on the highest levels of health and safety and welfare.”
The company has hosted events for renowned franchises such as Friends, Wicked, and Sex and the City. Recent financial filings show Luna’s sales reached £7.6 million in the year ending March 31, 2024, but the company reported a pre-tax loss of £1.6 million for the same period.
Netflix has opted not to comment on the situation.
