Compton Man Sentenced to Over 22 Years for Kidnapping Ransom
COMPTON, Calif. – Gustavo Deluna, a 35-year-old resident of Compton, has been sentenced to 22.5 years in federal prison for his role in a violent kidnapping that occurred in Orange in January 2024. The sentencing took place on Monday following Deluna’s guilty plea in December.
U.S. District Judge James Selna imposed a 270-month sentence after hearing arguments from both the defense and the prosecution. Prosecutors had initially sought a term of 293 months, while probation officials recommended 288 months, highlighting the need for stern consequences given the brutal nature of the crime.
During the abduction, the victim sustained severe injuries, including deep cuts to her left hand and wrist, as noted by federal prosecutors. These details underscored the physical and emotional toll on the victim during her ordeal.
Despite the seriousness of Deluna’s actions, prosecutors clarified that he was not considered the ringleader of the criminal operation involved in the kidnapping. The identity of the primary organizer remains unknown, raising questions about potential co-conspirators and whether further prosecutions are forthcoming.
As Deluna prepares to serve his sentence, he will be transferred to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. In the federal system, he is expected to serve the majority of his sentence, with limited credits for good behavior.
