Clave Especial Discusses Their Summer EP ‘Afterafter’ and Support for MrBeast Contestant Juan
Clave Especial, the corrido tumbado band from Salinas, California, is taking a well-deserved break following an eventful couple of months. Most notably, the trio performed at the renowned South by Southwest music festival in Texas, where they made headlines for singing a narcocorrido. They also engaged with Latino students at Cornell University in New York and undertook an impromptu 10-hour road trip to support Juan, a contestant from Mexico participating in one of MrBeast’s latest viral challenges.
Lead singer Alejandro Ahumada, guitarist Leonardo Lomeli, and tololoche player Rogelio Gonzalez felt a strong connection to Juan’s story, similar to their own experiences with hardworking parents. So, they chose to forgo press events for their latest EP, “Afterafter,” which was released on April 30, to meet and serenade him. The band even awarded a $5,000 scholarship to Juan’s son, Angel.
“Why? Because it felt so right,” said Ahumada. “His story connected with us, because we also come from hardworking parents that really gave it all for us.”
Upon returning to Salinas, the band celebrated their homecoming with a performance at the Salinas Sports Complex on May 4. “It’s like a full-circle moment,” Ahumada noted, reflecting on their growing relationship with their local audience.
During a recent video call from their childhood bedrooms, the band discussed “Afterafter,” a five-track EP with a lively tempo of 140 BPM. The songs, handpicked from their vault, evoke the nostalgia of summer days and the parties that follow. These selections stem from a larger collection of tracks that did not make the cut for their critically acclaimed debut, “Mija No Te Asustes,” released in 2025, which featured collaborations with Fuerza Regida, Edgardo Nuñez, and Luis R Conquirez.
“That’s actually the second time that we come back as Clave Especial,” said Ahumada, reflecting on their Salinas shows. “The first show was at the Fox Theater, which was a sold-out show. People were asking us, ‘Hey when are you guys coming back?’”
When asked about the genesis of “Afterafter,” Ahumada explained, “It was more like a fun concept that we kind of had in mind. We were actually working towards an album at a writers camp in Ensenada. It was at the beach… We want to give people a summer EP, something they can slap during the summer when they’re partying.”
If “Mija No Te Asustes” centers around a confident persona, how does “Afterafter” differ? “I think it’s that same guy from the first album, he’s still living it up,” Ahumada noted, emphasizing continuity in their storytelling.
Musically, guitarist Leo highlighted their signature sound: “We always hit the BPM at 140 BPM—that’s the Clave Especial essence.”
One standout track, “Scary Movie,” aligns with the vibe of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Ahumada remarked, “That song was actually composed by someone from Street Mob from Ensenada. I think that song was already in the vault.”
The band’s recent trip to North Carolina to support Juan drew attention, as they chose to skip press engagements to attend the competition held by MrBeast. Ahumada shared, “We saw that Juan told his son to leave the competition ‘cause he wanted to keep going to school. I think we’re one of the few bands in the industry that went to school.”
Reflecting on their SXSW performance, where they sang a cover of “El Del Palenque,” which honors the narco leader El Mencho, who was recently killed, Ahumada stated, “At the end of the day it’s just music. It’s storytelling. That’s what corridos is all about.” He added that the decision to perform the song was spontaneous, arising from the energy of the crowd. “I was like, keep it going, let’s play this one next. Nothing deep.”
When discussing their approach to performing corridos, Ahumada stated, “There’s a famous dicho: El que nada debe, nada teme. Like at the end of the day we don’t owe anybody anything.” He emphasized that their commitment to music is rooted in their personal sacrifices and experiences.
